RANFURLY SHIELD. RETAINED BY HAWKE’S BAY. [BY TELEGRAPH—PER PP.ESS ASSOCIATION.] NAPIER, Aug. 14. Hawko’s Bay successfully staved off a cYdlengo for the Ranfurly Shield here to-day by defeating Wellington in a one-sided match by 58 points to 8. Tho weather was glorious, and the crowd was estimated to have been 12,000. The teams were:—
A\ gllington i(challengers).—Grenfell, Sutton, South, .’fait, Svenson, M. Nieliolis, 11. E. Nieholls, Porter, Thonn as, Barry, Momu, Taylor, Tyree, Wilson and O’Roglin. Hawke’s Bay (holders). —Nepia, Grenside, Blake, Paewai, Johnson, Cooke, Mill, Walker, Swain, Craven, Mahoney, M. and C. Brownlie, Irvine, Kirkptarick. Wellington attacked with vigour
from the outset, but it proved only a Hash in the pan, mid by the middle of tho first half, Wellington were a beaten ..earn. Hawke’s Bay’s penetrating rearguard attacks and forward rushes proved the Waterloo of Wellington, whose tackling was weak. Wellington kicked off, and four minutes from the start, Nepia drop-kicked a beautiful penalty goal. Hawke’s Bay 3, Wellington 0. Hawke’s Bay kept up the pressure and as tho result of a hack movement Grenside scored, but missed the kick at gold. Hawke’s Bav (i, Wellington 0. Fierce hack movements by the homesters were nullified by stern tackling, but eventually Cyril Brownlie forced his way over. Nepia converted. Hawke’s Bay 11, AVellington O. . 1 Hawke’s Bay’s next score came from Swain, as the result of a forward rush. Nepia again converted.—lo—o. Three minutes Inter Grenside crossed, making the. score 19 to 0 in Hawke’s Bay’s favour.
Just before half time, Grenside again scored, and Nepia added the extra points.—Hawko’s Bay 24, AVellington 0. At half time. South, Porter and AA’ilson, of AVellington, retired injured, AA'arden, Jessop and McKay filling their places. Tho second hhlf proved a complete walkover for Hawke’S Bay, they running tho opposition to a standstill. Barry scored a try for AA’elliugton rtncl Nieholls converted it. Hawke’s Bay 24. Wellington 5.
This was followed by trios f..r Bay by Johnston, Blake and Cooke. Nepia converted the latter two, and Mark Nieholls then landed a penalty goal, following which Kirkpatrick (2), Grensidc (2), and Swain scored tries, Nepia converting two and Grenside one. Time sounded with the score— Hawke’s Bay 58 AA’ellington 8 Mr A. E. Eekhold refereed. AA’ilson (AVellington) was sent to tiie Hospital with concussion.
