A SWINDLING GKNIUS. BERLIN, July 1. “A man with such a genius for swindling and such powers of fascination has not appeared in Europe* for 150 years,” said theS judge, who this morning condemned Ivan Kutisker, a ■Jew from Russia, who carried on a great, financial undertaking during the inflation period, to go to penal servitude for live years and to pay a line of £200,000. “I am, of course, thinking of Cagliostro (Italian charlatan of the eighteenth century,)” said the judge, and added that the directors of the Prussian State Bank, who had lent him £700,000 (£500,000 of which is irrecoverable), could not he blamed because they were accustomed to deal with honest business men and not with charlatans from Eastern Europe. As a wit remarked: “It was the most extraordinary bit of whitewashing any judge lias done during the last 150 years.” It was. in point of . fact, a reply to Kutisker’s lawyers, who asked why the hank directors were not in the dock with their client.
