GREAT ART FIND. ROME, June 24. An important archeological discovery has been made at Cyrene, in Tripolitnnia, where Professor Giacomo Guidi has brought to light the bead of what is believed to be an original contemporary copy of the mythical statue of Zeus Olympus by Phydias. The head discovered by Prof. Guidi was found in fragments, which have been pieced together provisionally, it bears a striking resemblance to the heads on Roman coins and on gems preserved in the Berlin and Petrograd museums copied from Phydias’s statue, The discovery of an original copy of Phydias’s famous work, which is believed to have been destroyed by fire in Bysandtium (Constantinople) in a.d. 475, is an archaeological interest whic i can' hardelv be exaggerated. The head found bv Prof. Guidi is of enormous proportions. Probably the whole statue once existed as a huge pedestal was found in the same temple where the head was found. It is worthy to note that the temple where the discoveries were made was dictated to Jupiter (Zeus) Olympus as revealed by an inscription. Tons upon tons of sand had to be shifted before all the fragments where recovered, and the search lasted two months,
