TOHEROA SHELLFISH
BASIS OF FAMOUS SOUP. AUCKLAND, August 9. Toberoas, the shellfish which form the-basis of a soup so greatly favoured by the Prince of Wales, have a verylimited habitat on the western beaches of the North Auckland. The, demand for them when canned is greater than the supply, and an effort is therefore being made to propagate them. An experiment with this object in view was carried out last week when tolierons from Muriwai beach were released on- the Papamao beach near Tauranga, by Mr L. F. Ayson, chief inspector of fisheries, and Mr A. E. He fib id. fisheries expert of the Marino Department. Mr Hefford stated that the transportation was carried out under favourable conditions and as soon as the shellfish were released on Papamoa beach they buried themselves, indicating that they had withstood transportation without any apparent loss of vitality. To all appearances they had found on Papamoa beach a favourable habitat, hut whether they will stay and thrive there depends of course on the supply of suitable food. LIFE HISTORY NOT KNOWN. What constitutes favourable conditions for toberoas will not he definitely known until the investigations of their life history and the habits of species have been made. The number of shellfish liberated at Papamoa was between 800 and 1000, hut owing to a washout on the approach to the Muriwai beach a greater number could not be transported. The original intention was to secure about 3000, and as soon as t'he approach is repaired it is intended to make another visit to that portion of Muriwai beach where toberoa beds are thickest and secure further supplies for transport to Papamoa. Messrs Ayson and T-Tefford visited Mntnknna Island, opposite Mount Maungnuui, and inspected the beaches in tho vicinity of the Harbour Board’s property. It is intended on their next visit to release toberoas on Matakana beach. The sand there is very fine, and if food supplies are available the shellfish should thrive well in that locality.,
