[by TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] A THEFT. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. It). A thief entered the house of Doctor J. A. Newqil, in Oxford Terrace last- evening and stole £2. Entrance was gained through a window near tho back door, and the thief is said to have visited every room, ransacking the place. The occupants of the house slept on through it all, and woke up this morning to find many'things turned upside down in tho intruder’s search.

FATAL ACCIDENT. INYERCARGIL, Aug. 10. Daniel Mc-Quavrie, a, Bluff Harbour Board employee, who was admitted to the Southland Hospital on Sunday suffering from injuries received through the carrying away of a hawser on the Bluff wharf that afternoon, died in the hospital early this morning, death being due principally Lo concussion of the brain. The unfortunate man sustained terrible injuries, including a badly fractured leg and laceration of the bead am! neck.

ACCIDENT TO LIMITED TRAIN. WELLINGTON, August ]l. An accident to the Limited fortunately occurred ill a cutting and the cars did not capsize. Three came to rest on a clay face and the fourth stood across the track. It was the axle of this which broke. It was dragged for about 200 yards tearing up the sleepers and had its under gear smashed. Passengers took it calmly and there was no panic. Had the smash occurred a. few seconds later tlio train would have hceu on Belmont viaduct and the result might have been very different. The passengers were taken on to another train and got away four hours late. In the meantime passengers will have to walkpast the obstruction till it is cleared.

GOODS RECOVERED. AUCKLAND, August 9. Auckland has been suffering from the attentions of busy burglars for several weeks. Many of them still ieniain undetected, hut one set of mysteries has now been cleared up by detectives. A lot of property burgled in the Newtown district has been identified, included in the stolen, property being clothing, a valuable gramophone, a number of records and chemists’ goods. Those and other things recovered make a large pile at the Newtown Police Station. This morning a young man appeared in the Police Court charged with breaking and entering a chemist’s shop in Karangahape Road and stealing goods and money of a total value of £.l 12s. He was remanded on the application of the police.

TOUR CONFIRMED. WELLINGTON, August 11

A statement issued by Government House confirms to-day’s cable that the Duke and Duchess of York will come straight to New Zealand first. It is expected they will arrive in the latter end of February and so obtain more favourable weather than later on. They will go on to Australia in the latter part of March, and after visiting all States but West Australia, the opening ceremony at Canberra will lx? the culminating point of the tour, taking West Australia on the return. It isrimped the Royal Party will reach England again by the end of June.
