ONAKAKA IRON. <" WELLINGTON, Aug. 11. A meeting of the Wellington Industrial Association had before it a letter from Onakaka Iron and Steel Coy., the letter setting forth how its endeavours to build up an iron and steel manufacturing industry in New Zealand was being hampered. The letter stated the Company was compelled to reduce hands from seventy to eight at Onakaka Works, owing to the large quantities of pig iron coming into New Zealand, largely from India, where it was produced by htlwjur costing Is Gd jf to 2s per day compared with 14s to 16s paid by the company. A representative of the Department of Industries was present and stated the company’s, plant was a very fine one. Workmen’s homes had been erected in the vicinity with a school, making quite a township. A wharf has also been erected and many thousands sterling have been spent. It would he shameful if the • Company should now have such severe competi- J. tion to face. Now Zealand engineers had benefited by the bonus given by the Government, and the result was * the cheapening of imported iron. Onakaka iron was :ns good as any imported into New Zealand. The chairman said the Association would do its best to- see what assistance could be giveu.
