[Australia & N.Z. Cable Assoc ation. CHANNEL SWTM. LONDON, Aug. 9. Freyberg using an old Mudfish crawl swam strongly till the last two miles, when ahead of Miss Ederle’s record. From that out, an old war wound in the leg became increasingly troublesome and that was the real reason for abandonment.
SUBMARINE SINKS. (Received this day at II .0 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 9. While undergoing repairs at Devonport, submarine H. 29 sank. One artificer and four dockyard workmen were drowned. The “ Daily News ” says the submarine was undergoing tilting tests, and suddenly ht'cled and sank. Eyewitnesses state the man in the conning tower was blown into the water with six others and swept off the.deck. The last man to leave the vessel alive was seen struggling through the hatch under water. Five shipmates who had just been rescued jumped into the sen, and helped him ashore. Divers instantly’ descended and the fire brigade made fruitless attempts to raise the ship by pumping.
COAL EXPORT BANNED. PARIS, August 9. Cabinet lias prohibited the export or coal to England. SOME MINERS RESUME. LONDON, Aug.. 9. A steadily increasing number of coal miners are resuming work in Derbyshire, Leicestershire and some other centres. REPORTS DENIED. ' ■ LONDON, Aug. 0. Reports of widespread revolts in Russia are emphatically denied by Moscow, where the semi-official Tags Agency issued a statement that such rumours were spread by interests hostile to Russia, acting under instructions from States having a special interest in diverting international attention and opinions from their own plans.
A BOLD PROPHECY. LONDON, August 10.
Sir Oliver Lodge made a hold prophecy in a sermon at Manchester College Chapel, Oxford. He declared that science was on the verge of discovering the secret of life and answers to the questions. What is God in death, and of man? Ife predicted that before the British Association meets in Oxford again the answers will be supplied, and the universe revolutionised once more beyond all previous scope. He added that whereas throughout the nineteenth century and up to the present we were dealing chiefly with aerial works, there now lies before us the discovery of a, spiritual world, which lias not yet been accepted by science, but there are indications that the questions will shortly be answered.
