The Greymouth Main School Committee has decided to request Mr T. F. V. Sedon, ALP., to support the Bible in Schools Bill. The chairman, Mr -T. The adjourned meeting of those favourable to forming a miniature rifle club was held at the Soldiers’ Hall last evening, there being a fair attendance and several apologies were made for absentees. Air S. G. Sbarman provided a model of the rifle range and explained all details in relation thereto. Copies of the targets used were shown and particulars given in respect to rifles and the supply of ammunition. The suggestion was put forward to arrange for teams from the local societies and institutions, those mentioned being lodges, fire brigade, territorials, civil service, banks, professions, country districts, etc. Those present from Kamcri thought two teams of five men each from that district could he relied on. The annual subscription was fixed at 10s on enrolment. It was resolved as soon as forty members were enrolled to commence preparations for which Air Shannon has already laid excellent plans. The proposal to form a ladies’ branch, membership os, was also approved. It was resolved to meet on the 23rd inst. to receive reports of the canvassers and enrol members. Considerable interest is being displayed in the forthcoming competitions and entries are now being received and arc coining in freely. Mr Henry Edward West, of Bright Street, Cobden, died yesterday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs R. Whyte, Bright Street. The late. Mr V«»st arrived in Nelson from London over GO years ago. and after marrying there, came t.o the Charleston geld rush, afterwards settling in Greymouth, where he was for ever 29 years accountant for the firm of Thomas and Mcßeath. The late Air West acted as secretary to many organisations, filling that position lor the Druids’ Lodge for 30 years. We finally remind amusement seekers of Hokitika and the outlying districts of the Druids’ Grand Plain and Fancy Dress Ball, which takes placo in the Soldiers’ Hall to-morrow (AVednesday) evening. Patrons should not miss this big novelty ball, as the latest grand march, coupled with the many funny cuts and costumes connected with the fancy make-ups. will be the cause of a lot of amusement throughout, the evening. The ATinvhora Hockey Team will he the guests of the evening. A feature will be Ross’s Orchestra, including Air A. Parkinson (Greymouth), who has a wide reputation as being the one man hand, will also be present with his sot of drums.

The death took place at Cashmere Sanatorium, Christchurch last evening of Air Charles A. Cochrane, a former well-known resident of this district, lie was a native of Dungaiiville and 29 years of age. He served three years a the war where he was gassed and contracted tuberculosis. For some time h» was driving Alessrs Orr Bros’ motor lorry between Hokitika and Kokatalii, but for the last two years be bad been an inmate of the sanatorium, gradually fading away. He leaves a wife (residing in Hokitika), a sister (Nurse Amy Cochrane, of Hamitoq) and five brothers (Ernest, of Aratika; William, of Hokitika; Percy, of South Westland: Janies in North Island; and Edncy of Kuninra). General sympathy Will lie extended to the relatives in their loss.

A particularly bold and impudent daylight, robbery in Christchurch was committed on Friday. Airs C. Hammond, 53 Gloucester Street, at about 3.30 o’clock, was walking along Cambridge Terrace near the AYorcester Street Bridge. She was going to pay her .landlord five weeks’ rent for a, hoarding-house she conducts in Gloucester Street. She had in a purse, which was in a bag, £ls in notes, the total miidc up by one £5 note, eight £1 notes and four 10s notes. She intended to cross the river by the Hereford Street Bridge. As she passed AYorcester Street and turned to go in to the path opposite the Canterury Club, a man approached her. She received a violent blow on tile bead and the bag was snatched from her band. There seemed to be nobody else about, >nid the affair was so sudden that she could nrit give the alarm. The man, jumping on to a bicycle, quickly disappeared; fearing Airs Hammond with a few pieces of the chain handle of the bag. Her. face still bears a large bruise cm the right. She can give only a Hazy description of her assailant. He wore a dark suit and a light-coloured hat with a wideblack band. His bic.vo’e was light-coloured.
