OKURU NEWS.

(From A Correspondent.) JULY 20. The Bishop accompanied by Mrs AVest-Watson and Rev. Young arrived at Okuru on, Sunday evening. Confirmation service was held on Monday evening and was well attended. Our visitors-were much impressed with our mountains arid forest and took a deep interest ill the settlement life in our isolated district. Air Young was in his usual good spirits. Alter the service all the residents proceeded to the Hall where an interesting euchre tournament was indulged in, followed by a dance. Useful prizes were won by those successful.

Messrs AfcPherson Bros, are engaged in bush-felling and Alessrs Harris and Alcßride are similarly engaged iii the Upper Okuru A’alley. .This belt of fertile country is little known but will in the future be an important source of cream supply. The ketch “Elsie” signalled outside this evening but owing to a person using the harbour boat and leaving it •oil tile other side of the harbour, the acting harbour master was unable to lay tlie beacons before dark, with the result- that the ketch had to remain outside. JULY, 22. The ketch “Elsie” proceeded northwards from Ooen Bay Islands (Okuru) yesterday and was unloading and loading cargo at Bruce Bay Landing today. The cargo comprised chiefly honey from Alessrs Harvey and Cain’s Knrangarua apiai'ies. The “Elsie’s” next trip is to Okuru. Passengers for this trip to Okuru arc, All 1 Janies and family and Aliss Cowan. Cargo comprises general and live-stock. The Government steamer is due in Jackson’s Bay the first week in September with a cargo of stud stock for local run-holders.

At a meeting of shareholders of the ketch-“ Elsie” held at Bruce Bay this week the general feeling was not in sympathy with the venture of installing new engines. The Bruce Bay settlers cannot boast of having received the best of attention from this quarter in the past, and it is not likely much support will be forthcoming from there. JULY 29.

Alessrs McKenzie Bros., run-holders, and for many years the only residents residing south of Okuru havedisposed of their extensive holdings and have been succeeded by Alessrs Fraser and Gunn, run-holders, Outran). One of the AfeKenzies, now well on in middle ago, was born in this isolated spot. Both of these well-known hermits, together with three others were reported missing during the early part of tlio year, no word haying been received from, them for several months. Only 77 £1 shares have been raised, it was reported at a meeting held at Bnic-e Bay recently, towards the fitting of new engines in the “-Elsie.”
