The Committee to which the.petitions on Religious Exercises in Schools Rill was referred reported that it was their opinion that the present free, secular and compulsory education system should be maintained and that full opportunity should lie given lor the adoption of a voluntary system, such as the Nelson system under which the teaching was conducted outside school hours, under which the State exercised no authority and under, which there was no compulsion or violation of the rights of conscience. The debate was continued until 4.5 S p.m. when the second reading was carried by 17 to 12 and the Council rose till 2.30 the next afternoon.

Bill,- Cemetries’ Amendment Bill and Industrial Societies Amendment Bill. The House rose at 9.30 till 2.30 p.m. next day.
