The Commons by 173 to 40 votes defeated the Labourite proposal to adjourn for summer recess till 17th. Aug., instead of Sept. 12th., in view of the r
coal stoppage. A Labourite contended that the situation might change during the next three weeks and the House would be in session in order to effect a peaceful settlement. Sir A. Chamberlain said that sixteen days’ Parliamentary time was devoted to the coal discussion without powerfully contributing to the solution of the dispute which could only he ended hv the parties thereto. Thereafter a practically empty House on the motion for adjournment debated tho Anglo-American Debt Settlement, Coal Stoppage and other matters. vi
The Commons meet at brief intervals at the end of August, September and October to renew the emergency regulations if the dispute is still in existence.
