MAN KILLED IN SHIP. CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. I
,Mr Justico Herdman, in it judgment read in Christchurch, Hold that the Canadian Government, the owner of tho “Canadian ChnLlengier,” on which Isaac Welsh, stevedore, was killed at Lyttelton on November 17, was not liable for damages in respect of the accident, and judgment was given in favour of the Canadian Government, with costs, as, per scale. Tho action was brought by Welsh’s widow, who claimed £3929 damages. Welsh was killed by a cask of pelts falling on him from a sling. His Honour held that, although the filing was faulty, the officers responsible had used every precaution in inspecting it.
AN UNUSUAL INSTANCE. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 4. Almost two hours after a theft case had been heard in tho Magistrate’s Court before Mr H. P. Lnwry.'an order was made for the suppression o'accused’s name. He was a voutn who was charged with stealing money from his mother. Accused had been sentenced to a term in the Borstal Institute, and the matter was disposed of finally as far as the regular Court procedure was concerned. Two horn’s afterwards, the mother, weeping bitterly, came to the bench and whispered a few words to tho Magistrate. An order was then made for the suppression of the youth’s name from publication.
MURDER. CHARGE. WELLINGTON, August 5. Charged with the murder of Elsie Davis, a married woman, aged 31, Elizabeth Inn Neville, married, aged 48, residing at 150 Queen Street Drive, Lvall Bay, appeared on remand before Magistrate Page in the Police Court yesterday and on the application of Detective Ward a further remand was granted until Wednesday, 11th Aug. Bail was renewed in bond of £3OO and two sureties of £l5O each.
G 0 VERNOR-G ENERAL. WELLINGTON, Aug. 3. Their Exoell.encfes the GovernorGeneral- and Lady Alice Fcrgusson will arrive in Christchurch for the Grand National Meeting on Tuesday. August 10th., and will he present at the races during the day. In the evening Her Excellency will go to the Christchurch Hunt Club’s ball. On the following day the GovernorGeneral will formally open the new open-air school which has recently been erected in connection with the tuberculosis institutions on the Cashmere Hills. In the evening their Excellencies will attend the Canterbury Officers’ Club annual military ball. On Thursday, August 12th., their Excellencies will again be present at the races, and will leave for Wellington the samo evening.
