Ponsford and Woodful after a slow start, ooened out freely, every other hall producing runs. They put on 117 runs before Woodful was beaten. The howlers maintained a good length, hut caused little trouble, though Hewetson at times induced the batsmen to ho cautious. Frequent changes in the howling had little effect on the batsmen who were confident, hut not scintillating. Ponsford’s exhibition was delightful, and marked by powerful drives to the on, while cuts and pulls varied the play, with periodical leg glances. He hit fifteen fours. Collins showed the lack of practice. He also was hampered by' the injury to his wrist. Nevertheless lie gave a sound display with off drives and leg hits.
