FREIGHT RATES. SYDNEY, August y. The shipping companies trading to China and Japan have decided to increase the freight rates for a number of lines of general cargo loaded at Australian ports. The increase, which is 5s per ton. or approximately ten per cent, lias been found necessary owing to the heavier running expenses. PORT KEMBLA. SYDNEY, August -5. The Sydney (Marine Underwriters have received a cable to the effect that the Port Kembla salvage contractors cannot recommend a further attempt to refloat the vessel and are now concentrating on the cargo. LABOR. TROUBLE SETTLED. BRISBANE, August 5. As a result of the conference between the Italian sugar cane growers and the local section of Australian Workers’ Union, the latter guarantee to make no distinction between the Italian and British cane during the season, thus ending the trouble.
