An amusing story relates to a. crossing the Karnkatawhero stream, between To Araroa and Hicks Bay, which according to Maori tradition, was bound by a special tapu. At one time no native would cross the river at this point without first spreading mats upon the ground, so that rocks would not fall upon him and kill him. The ancient who delivered this version of the tradition in the course of a Native Land Court hearing at Te Araroa stated that lie had never heard of anyone being killed by the falling rocks, hut that, lie naively observed, was because everyone observed the tapu which affected the crossing. Since the coming of the Europeans the powers of the Maori gods have decreased, and none of the younger generation fears to cross the stream.

It is laid down, however. that present holders of such licenses shall have all their rights preserved, so long as tho licenses remain in force. Such existing licenses may be renewed, subject to .the provisions of the regulations under which they were issued. Another clause provides that a teacher who has applied for and then refused a position offered by an Education Board shall be ineligible for appointments to a position by any Board for a period of twelve months, or such shorter period as may be fixed by the Director of Education, unless lie satisfies the Director that there was sufficient and proper reason for the refusal. For some time past the Canterbury Automobile Association has been urging the provision of better arrangements for the trucking of motor-cars at Springfield and Otira, and it wifi be welcome news to motorists contemplating a trip to the West Coast to learn that effect is being given to the Association’s wishes in the matter. Mr J. S. Hawkcs, secretary-organiser, of the Association, stated on Tuesday that he had receiver] information that an end-on loading bank has keen constructed at Springfield, and that the construction of a similar bank is in hand at Otira. These loading banks, Mr Hawkes stated, will be a great improvement on the method previously in use. The number of railway trucks required will be backed up at one end of the hank, the ends and fronts of the trucks will lie down and the motorist will be able to drive bis car from tlic loading bank to the farthest truck, succeeding motorists similarly filling up the intervening trucks. As a result of the provision of this means of trucking cars, Mr Hawkes anticipates that many motorists, who have been deterred in the past owing to the inconvenience attending the trucking of cars, will make the journey to the West Coast.
