DUNEDIN, Aug. 3. At the Supreme Court, Norman. Ernest Johnston, aged 21, for theft was sentenced to three years’ probation. Patrick John ,'Jager was acquitted on the ground of insanity, of the murder of Arthur Creagli at South Dunedon. Jager and Creagli were intimate friends sharing a bedroom at a boarding bouse. There bad been no quarrel nor ill feeling. The evidence of four medical witnesses agreed that accused was suffering from delusional insanity, and did not realise the physical nature of the crime. Prisoner was ordered to be detained at a Mental Hospital. TIMARIT, August 3.
At the Supreme Court to-day before Mr Judge Adams, three Maoris appeared. One, Harold Tarewai Wesley, was given probation for three years, and ordered to pay the costs of prosecution (£5 18s fid) plus £o compensation, on the charge of receiving a motor cycle and knowing it to be unlawfully obtained.
Harold Waaka, alias Walker, pleaded guilty to a charge of carnal knowledge. Tfe was sentenced to reformative treatment not exceeding six
months. Mason Teraki, charged with breaking and entering, was sentenced to reformative treatment for 18 months. PERJURY SENTENCE. TTMARU, Aug. 4. At the Supreme Court to-day Victor Harris, was sentenced by Justice Adams to twelve months’ hard labour on a charge of perjury. AUCKLAND, Aug. 4 At the Supreme Court, Michael Keady, licensee of the Brittania hotel was charged with receiving liquor stolen from Nathan’s bond store on June 12th., and was sentenced to three months’ bard labour and fined £SOO.
