It did not take the Brigade many minutes, however, to master it, hut not before it had penetrated through, the thin wall between Alulqueen’s shop and that of Aitkcn V.ml Peters’ adjoining, the ceiling in the. front compartment of which was partly blackened by the llames. Afulqueen’s shop was gutted, and the contents destroyed, but neither of the other establishments suffered much, Armstrong’s escaping altogether, except for the effect of Smoke and some water on the floor, while the damage by water to Aitkcn and Peters’ stock was comparatively slight. Had the all arm been delayed by only a few minutes, however, the two shops adjoining that wA’ich was gutted would have suffered the same fate, but the rapid work of the Fire Brigade availed in the circumstances to effect a very good snve.
