The carrying of reflectors on the roar of bicycles lias been advocated by Mr Sidev several tunes this session, and to-day, lie called the attention of the Minister of Internal Affairs to a fatal accident, which had occurred to a eyclst who had lieen overtaken by a motor. It was time, he said, that the by-law, in operation in some localities making a reflector compulsory on the backs of bicycles should be brought into operation uniformly by means of an ■amendment of the statute. The Minister, in reply, said that local authorities had power to insist on the carrying of reflectors, lint the- question of making this general was under consideration and could ho dealt with if an amendment of the Motor Vehicles Act were introduced.
The number of deaths recorded during 1925 was 11,020. The census and statistics office gives the crude deathrate as 8.07. This latter figure is based upon a standard population compiled by the International Intitute of Statistics, in which the age-distribution (eleven age groups) of the population of nineteen {European countries at their census nearest to year 1900 is used in the computation of international death-rates. The New Zealand crude rate is thus corrected as regards the age and also the sex of the population. The. crude death-rate (8.29) was equal to that of the previous year, the lowest on record. The international standardised rate (8.67) shows a further decline. Both these rates are in all probability lower than those of any other civilised country.
A most interesting discovery has been made by Mr Scliaw on his property at No. 4 Line, Fitzherbert West, says the “ M.nnnwntu Times.” While stumping in a paddock, he was surprised to find what At first looked like a huge boulder imbedded in the clay, but its peculiar condition led him to investigate further, when it was found to have a sponge-like appearance and to seem identical with the refuse that is removed periodically from the furnace of a destructor. The huge boulder must have been red hot when it landed in the paddock in which it was found, as the day all round was burnt and baked to brick hardness and there were also ashes. The weight of the boulder was estimated at about three hundredweight. The only apparent explanation of its presence at Fitzherbert, is that the stone is a meteorite.
