COOMA’S CAPTAIN CHARGED
MELBOURNE, July 28
An inquiry was commenced concerning the loss of the steamer Cooma on July 7th at the Marine Court. Captain Maine is charged with neglecting to navigate the vessel with due caution when approaching the North Reef.
Captain Maine gave evidence that the steamer was stranded owing to a phenomenal set in and an abnormal tide, which was working against the tides set down in tlie timetables. When tho vessel struck she was travelling 1G knots, v.-liicli was more than her engines were capable of doing, thus indicating something abnormal had happened to increase the speed of the ship so quickly. A PROPOSED COMMISSION. MELBOURNE, Jluy 29. Mr Bruce announced the Federal Government has decided to send to America a party of Australian industrialists. including representatives of both employers and employees, in order that they might see for themselves what has been achieved on the other side of the Pacific and how it was achieved.
