William Dwyer, the head of the alleged forty million dollars rum-running syndicate, was found guilty of a conspiracy to violate the national liquor and customs laws. NEW YORK, July 26. Dwyer was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, and fined ten thousand dollars.
HURRICANE IN WEST INDIES. NEW YORK, July 2G. Terrific hurricanes swept the West Indies, especially the Bahamas, where the crops are extensively damaged. Porto Rico reports the coffee crop is ruined, and the country is widely flooded. The railway tracks are damaged. WASHINGTON. July 26. A Navy Department radiogram from San Juan, Porto Rico, states: “A hurricane has demolished all the land telegraphs on the island.” No other details are given.
