OBITUARY

AVILLIAM JOHN REYNOLDS. The death of Mr AVilliam John Reynolds, of Ivaroro, a very well-known and respected resident of the district, who from 1899 till 1921 filled the position of Inspector of Public AA'orks on the AVest Coast, took place yesterday after an illness lasting since last year. Some little time before his death, the deceased was admitted for treatment to the Grey River Hospital, but despite all that medical skill could do his ailment terminated fatally about 7 o’clock last evening. The late Air Reynolds, who was born on July, 30th. 1857 at Geelong. Victoria, arrived in Dunedin as a young boy in tlie early sixties, and, with liis parents (the late Air and Airs Joseph Reynolds, both well-known Hokitika residents) he arrived in the year 1866 at Hokitika. Until 1890 lie engaged in gold mining and also along with his father in contracting work. In 1890 he joined the Pulllie AA'orks Department as Inspector at Blenheim. He was subsequently stationed at Palmerston North. ITawera, AVnnganui and AVellington, coming in 1899 to the Grey office of his Department, where he remained until superannuated five years ago. During his more than 30 years’ service with the Department of Public AA'orks the late Air Reynolds was overseer of the construction of many public buildings, a few being the Greymouth Post Office, the Greymouth Public AA'orks Office, tlie Hokitika Government Buildings, the Greymouth Court-house and the Hokitika Public Library, the Hawcra Post Office and the Palmerston North Courthouse. Throughout his term he had the confidence of all'with whom he had business to do in his official capacity. During the past year liis health had been indifferent.- Besides his wife, he is survived by four, sons, Messrs Richard, Ashton and AVilliam Reynolds of Greymouth and Air James Reynolds of Christchurch. Afr Howard Reynolds (Westland County Bridge Foreman) is a brother and Miss Minnie Reynolds, of Bealev St-, is a sister. Very general sympathy will lie extended to the relatives. The funeral takes place to-morrow at Greymouth.
