THE NEW ALLOY.

LONDON, June 1. Big economies in power, will it is hoped, ho made possible by the use ol the new steel alloy developed byMessrs Hjidlickls, Ltd., the, Sheffield .steel-masters. Gas turbines and turbo compressors made of this new steel have run at the enormous speed of up to 53,000 revolutions per minute at aworking temperature of about 1,700 degrees F., and even when they are red hot. Sir Robert Hadfield, the head of the firm, said to a reporter yesterday: “The effect of such, temperature on «ist-iron cr ordinary steel would be to cause them to oxidise and scale away.. The sew Era ATV steel, as it is called will, however, continue to work under these high temperature conditions • without showing oxidation while it retains high tenacity. “The use of such steel opens up a wide prospect in which its use, I believe, will help to solve many industrial problems in Elio application of high temperature puses, and may in time bring about the desired solution of the gas turbine problem. “Thus it is hoped that it may one day bo possible, by- the combustion of coal,i to pass the gases produced directly through turbo compressors—thus utilising the energy from coal with the utmost economy. SUCCESSFUL ECONOMY. “Rotor gas turbine wheels made of this now steel have already been used on a large scale and have given highly efficient, results. “11. is .therefore possible to visualise Iho day when gas turbo compressors, or devices of similar nature will be as commonly employed as the steam uirbiue, using instead of steam bightomperature gases. The first stop towards this has been accomplished by the discovcrv mid development of this new steel alloy.”

DEFYING TILE DOCTOR. “ The doctors will say nicotine is bad for you. Well—l still smoke eight cigars every day. The doctors say you must have exercise, walk in the air or play with the ball. Well, l have never taken any exercise in my life unless you count the four hours a day practice at the piano. 1 have a beautiful little summer house at Fabriano, in Italy, with lovely gardens, but I never walk out in them. All the fresh air I want comes to me through the window. So there is my life. And I am 77! But I do not exhort everyone to follow my example, for, after all, ] am Pachmann, the unique. I laugh at your doctors.”—Pachmann, the pianist.
