AUCKLAND ROYAL SHOW. AUCKLAND. July 24

No nfght attractions arc to lie provided for at the Auckland Royal Show, it being considered that the expense of lighting did not warrant. It was stated at the meeting of the A. and R. Association that the cost would be £3OO a uigbt. The Secretary reported that the prize money would exceed £2,000 and towards this a subsidy of £l,-250 has been provided. SPEECH BY HON. 'McLEOD. WELLINGTON, July 24. Speaking at a dinner to the Winter Show Exhibitors Hon A. D. McLeod, Minister of Industries and Commerce, refuted the.idea which has long existed that the interests of men on the land and of manufacturers were opposed. For years he used every occasion to point out that this country would never become truly great on primary production alone. After this session be proposed to go round and become thoroughly acquainted with the industries. He liked to find things out for himself and not to accept everything told him. He hoped New Zenlhnders would not establish industries to be played with. They .must he run on businesslike manner, not running continually to the ■ Government for protection. Tile raw material was in the country and its utilisation in secondary industries would absorb labour. The Minister agreed with Sir Frank Heath that research was necessary in secondary as well as primary industries. Air McLeod thought the country’s exports were quite creditable but there had been too much importation. 'Phis was the point that needed careful watching;
