INCOME TAX PROSECUTION. WELLINGTON, July 23

Charles Cainperde.wn Odlin was charged at the Magistrate’s Court, with wilfully or negligently making false returns as to his income for the years ending March 31. 1922-25 inclusive. Odlin was further charged with wilfully making false returns in inspect of the income cf the company for the years ending September 30, 1921--4 and also with aiding and abetting the company to make false refill ns. Mr o‘Leary, for Odlin, said he v.as not prepared at the moment to go on with the personal charge. Mr Maeassey, for the Crown, objected. The Magistrate said he thought the cases tvould have to be taken in Mieir order.

Air O’Leary was granted a concession of an hour. On the resumption, Mr Tudhope said he proposed, with the consent of the other side, to take the charges together The charges were alternative, hut counsel contended that the defendant must have known the returns were false He proposed to ask for a conviction on the first charge in each instance. > In the case against C. C. Odlin, Hm Worship imposed a conviction on the alternative charge of negligently I™*ino- false returns. He intimated ti a luT would assess the penalty after further .barges had been disposed of.
