WHITEBAIT

CLOSE- SEASON SUGGESTED

(Christchurch “Press.”)

Soa *« members of the Council of tie North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society were of the opinion that the feociety would be locking for trouble in sending a*'remit to the New Zealand Acclimatisation Societies’ Association asking for tile closing of the whitebaitfishing season at the end of November of each year.

It was reported that the conference would be held either late in August or early in September, and the appointing ol delegates was left in the hands of the president and the vice-president.

Mr P. j. Wilson suggested that a remit should be framed asking that the season for whitebait catching should be closed in November. He thought this would not -nppi.v to Maoris, as the: Treaty of Waitangi provided that they should be allowed to fish at any time.

Tlio chairman asked whether this should apply to the West Coast as well. “LOOKING FOR. TROUBLE. ’ Professor R. Speight: I think you’re looking for trouble if you do that. Mr S. F. Barnett: You’re for trouble in any case, by interfering with a man’s living. Mr D. M. Bradbury held that if river pollution was done away with there would bo no need to limit the ’ season. It- was pointed out by other members that there were very small supplies of J whitebait in rivers where there was no pollution. The opinion was expressed that the remit should be. sent as too much whitebait fishing lessened the amount of trout food. Air L. A. Shniid said that if it was put- in that manner, “it would be blown out at one crack.” The remit, as decided upon, stated that owing to the depletion of supplies of whitebait, the season be closed at the end of November each year. It was stated that the remits would have to be brought before a -special general meeting of the-Association, but other members thought that there would not he time to call one before the remits went forward. It was resolved to hold the special meeting in accordance with the :tiles of the society, and the remits would be brought forward then.
