Grimmett in. excellent form took most of the wickets which were gained by trapping flic batsmen into jumping forward to drive .so that they were cither bowled or were stumped by Oldfield, who kept wickets magnificently and stumped three and caught two. He did most of the- fielding, tlio remainder of the team being little called on. Weir gave a bright exhibition of hitting Grimmett freely. He went out in attempting to pull a short hall, giving Ponsford his first wicket, the break beating tlio bat. Bardsley and Wood full after a slow opening did not hesitate to go lorward and scored freely, mostly singles. After tea practically every ball yielded a scare. Bardsley, when the fust wicket had put on 143, succumbed to a hall from Anderson which he attempted to glance to leg, but pulled 011 to his wicket. Gregory imparted liveliness to tlio game hitting out powerfully. Woodfull was safe and indulged in crisp drives.
