Experiments are being conducted at the State Farm at Waimaunga, in connection with the internal disease of swedes in Westland. Mr C. S. Dalgliesh. the local instructor iu agriculture, and Mr R. Maters, plant pathologist, and officer in charge of the biological laboratory, Wellington, are about to make the first examination of these experiments.

Bruce, the South Island representative of the New Zealand Counties’ Association, who lias been laid aside with illness for some months has tendered his resignation as a member of the Main Highways Board. It, was with very great regret that the hoard received the resignation of Mr Bruce, who was one of the foundation members of the hoard, and, on account of his untiring efforts and know" ledge of county administration, had proved a most valuable member.

The news of the result of the third test football match yesterday afternoon was received locally direct from the playing field at Sydney. The 2BL Sydney Broadcasting station sent out particulars of the game at intervals, specially for listeners-in in New Zealand, and a complete description of the closing play was given over the air. The filial stages of the game were hotly contested and the announcer made it plain that the New South Wales men were playing a wonderful game—which made the win of the New Zealanders the more creditable.

Infectious and other notifiable diseases reported in the Canterbury and West Coast Health District for the week ended noon yesterday totalled 88. as follows: —Canterbury: Scarlet fever 11, diphtheria 5, tuberculosis 14, pneumonia 8, pneumonic influenza 43, puerperal sepsis 3. West Const: Diphtheria 1, pneumonic influenza 5. Deaths in the Canterbury district totalled 13, as follows:—Diptheria 1, tuberculosis 4, pneumonic influenza. 6, eclampsia 1. On the West Coast one death from tuberculosis was reported.
The first of the railway carriages painted in the new colour, “Midland Lake” was placed in commission on the Grev-Hokitika line. The painting of the vehicle was carried out in the Grey Railway Workshops, and is the first to be put into commission in the South Island. The new colour is to be a permanent one for the painting of all railway passenger carriages' in New Zealand .and though costing more than the old painting, will last considerably longer.
