WESTLAND PROGRESS LEAGUE.
The Executive of the above met at the County Chambers last evening at 7.40 p.m. Present:—Dr Teichelman (President), Messrs T. W. Duff, W. Jeffries, W. Wilson, ,1. C. Macfarlane, W. Craw, I). J. Evans, T. W. Bruce, J. Morris. Apology was made for the absence of Mr W. Butler. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. : From Canterbury League forwarding copy of minutes.—Received. From Marlborough League forwarding annual report.—Recevied. From Southland League forwarding annual report.—-Received. From Southland League forwarding
particulars of a proposed publicity scheme for the South Island by establishing an agent in Melbourne.—Received. A discussion favourable • to supporting the idea ensued. From Fields Instructor, Agricultural Department, commenting on experiments in tho district, particularly in Kumara, where, however, drainage was costly.—Received. From same reporting in regard to the winter school to he held this year in the Murchison district.—Received. It was stated Mi- Seddon was arranging for a tour of agricultural instructors to the Westland district. From same with regard to top dressing experiments which were urged ns necessary for the Coast lands.—Received. Mr Jeffries and other expressed concurrence with the suggestions made by Mr Dalgliosh who was carrying out experiments in different parts of the district. From Commissioner of Lands advising particulars of the next trip ?f tho Tutnnekni to the Sounds and Jackson Bay.—Received. The President stated lie had given the information to the Canterbury League. Tt was resolved to enquire from Mr Climie the number travelling from Christchurch.
GENERAL. Mr Wilson stated an exhibition of pictures would be available for tho district next month if the League cared to take up the matter. After discussion, no action was taken. Mr Jeffries referred to the annual report of |the Marlborough League which mentioned the Topliouse road, West Coast to Blenheim. When the road was through, the Coast, Mr Jeffries said, would be within a day journey to Wellington, via Blenheim. The bridges necessary were now well
advanced. It was resolved to commend the Marlborough League for the interest and energy displayed in hastening the completion of such an important link. In reply to Mr Bruce tho President said it was not possible to arrange for booklets for the Toronto Exhibition in the time available. A good deal had been done in other directions in pub- N lieity, the booklets having been sent far and wide following the Dunedin Exhibition. A local pamphlet was now being nrepared for publication on bcbnlf of four business people. Some ten thousand copies would be circulated gratis.
A subsidy of £12,1 was being raised or a hut oil Chancellor’s Ridge, Fox Glacier region. It was hoped to secure die balance 1 required from the Govern-
ment. The Alpine Club had the matter in hand. A good site had been secured. Two guineas was voted to the building scheme.
