LATE LOCALS.

Air A\ r . J. Alellroy, of Christchurch, and formerly of Kumara and Grey mouth, is at present seriously ill. Alaster Leslie Robert Larcombe. pupil of the Greymouth Technical School, has been appointed to a position in tbe Lands Office at Hokitika. Afr Charles Cabot, Advance Alanager for “ The Optimists ” Coy., of International Entertainers, is at the present on the Coast arranging for the Company an itinerary embracing all the centres. Ways and means for carrying on the work of beautifying, improving and extending open spaces and recreation grounds in Greymouth, were discussed at a public meeting held in the Council Chambers at tbe Town Hall there last evening. The Mayor, Air AV. H. Parfitt, presided. After discussion, a committee was set up to carry out a general programme of town improvement and beautifying.

About 2.15 o’clock this afternoon tbe central fire bell gave an alarm. As usual the Fire Brigade turned out smartly and all the gear was taken to the.,scene of the outbreak, which proved to be the residence of Air G. AA r . Dfile, Fitzherbert Street. The fire w’us caused -evidently by a defective chimney, the inside lining being oil fire. The brigadesmen soon had an ample supply of water, and all damage was past. The damage done, by the fire is slight, and is amply covered by insurance. Superintendent Braddon was in charge of the Fire Brigade.
