[by telegraph—per press association. BURGLAR. SURPRISED. AUCKLAND, July 18. A: burglar experienced a narrow escape from being captured on Frida.v evening while inside the premises of Messrs R. J. and J. O. Sims. After lie had fired a charge of gelginite in an attempt, to low open the sate about 8.20 p.m., a tramway motonnan, who was driving a city-hound car past the premises of Messrs Sijns heard a loud explosion. and on arrival at the intersection of Customs and Queen Streets immediately informed Constables Bess and Watts of the unusual happening. Both the constables hurried routn and found that one ol the doors. «hifh was open, hole the marks of ;• jemmy. Each constable watched a door and later went inside to search for a man whom they heard moving about inside. However, the burglar made a quick exit unnoticed through another dear. Suspqucnt investigations showed that the first shot fired had no effect on tho safe. Another charge was found packed into the key-hole wjtli a fuse attached and ready lor firing.
