Jt is understood that a. relaying gang will arrive from Christchurch at an early date to proceed with operations between Arahura and Greymouth.

Evidence of the timber slump is furnished in the fact that on the West Coast alone 120 men have been put off during the last three weeks, thus justifying the statement that the state of affairs which lias conic to pass in the industry to-day is the worst since the slump of some twenty years ago.

While walking along the Greymouth waterfront shortly after 6 o’clock last evening, a young man named Lees missed” his footing and slipped over the wharf near the Orewn’s anchorage and fell into the water. He was luckily caught amongst the timberwork of the wharf and was rescued from this position by Mr Frank Dick.

Shortly before mid-night on Saturday a fire broke out in Hahn's smaller bus. when it was standing for the night in Nelson street, Greymouth. at the southern end of the town. The driver. Mr Stuart Andrews, had some time before retired to bed, and when awakened he saw the .vehicle burning in the cab. The firebells gave an alarm and the Fire Brigade, on arrival found the fire had such a hold that they directed their efforts with the chemical engine towards saving the engine, in which work they were apparently .successful. Tile body of the car was ruined, the engine alone escaping. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The bus. which was the first used bv Mr Halm in his service, was insured for about C4CO in the South British Office.
