MELBOURNE, July 16 The fossil remains of a Nototherian. a species which lived fifteen to twentythousand years ago. has been discovered among the Tertiary fossils of the I’uslkn (Victoria) caves. It is regarded as a fine specimen, and experts are of the opinion that it provides additional evidence of the prehistoric existence of cave- men in the locality.

It states that, if proper effect is not given to establish the military force of tbc Commonwealth, Australian powei in time of crisis may be greatly impaired. Mr Charnel also points out that, with the funds now available, it is not possible to place an Australian army in a state of preparedness, and lie concludes by strongly emphasising that a considerate period must elapse before any decision to increase the present degree of preparation can produce practical results.
