All the finest traditions of fho American stage, nro possessed by Elaine Hammerstciu, whoso latest picture, “Everyman’s Wife,” opens to-night at the Princess Theatre. .She is the daughter of Arthur Haimnersteiu end the granddaughter of Oscar Hammerstein, one of the first and probably the most noted operatic impresario of a decade ago. • Elaine was bom ill New York City, but she was rot raised in a theatrical atmosphere. As a little girl she was taken to Philadelphia and placed in the Armitage School, a school controlled by Quakers. After graduation Elaine went to New York and was persuaded by her Dither to accept, a role in a stage play he was then easting. Elaine acquiesced but left the company alter five days without notice. Elaine said she disliked tbo stage and refused to have anything to do with it. But her genius demanded an outlet, and she soon launched a successful stage career independent, of her father. Three years ago Afiss Hammcrstein came to Hollywood and has appeared in a number of featured, roles. The leading feminine part in “Everyman’s Wife.”
