THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
, Scientific Research. The question of scientific research was a broad and varied one, blit if We did not keep abreast of the times, we should find ourselves sadly lagging behind our competitors. We should make that .start now, and should eliminate all narrow jealousies as to localities. —The Prime Minister. urn imigr^nwnwiiiaMiiiMßHßmTrua
[Australia & N.Z. Cable Association.] NEW YORK, July 11. A later Lake Denmark message says: “Twenty-four hours after the arsenal explosion, every effort to enter the immediate arsenal' area was frustrated by the continued fire and by occasional exploding shells, which, from time to time, still bombarded the countryside. No fewer than twenty-four villages and towns were destroyed or damaged by tlie detonation. While many thousands are absolutely homeless. others are homeless because their dwellings are unfitted for occupancy, or because of the people’s fear of a further explosion. Thousands of men, women and, children were all day leaving the vicinity of the arsenal*, seeking for places ot safety, while hundreds are either entering temporary hospitals for treatment or are leaving them after receiving first aid.” “Various New York chemical firms have sent supplies of anti-tetanus serum, with which many of the injured are -being injected.” “The danger of explosions at tho Army Arsenal is now not so >uute, although tho outbuildings of the Army reservaion, nearby, arc still smouldering.” , 1 “The Secretary for War, Mr Davis, who toured the area in an automobile, declared that the Army Arsenal is row fully protected.”
