It transpires that the steamer Makura, which left Sydney for San Francisco on May 22nd. last, had on hoard 1,000.0(10 sovereigns for that port. Presumably secrecy was observed on the principle of “Safety first.” says the “Sydney Morning Herald. There is no special significance concerning the shipment. Australia is a gold-produc-ing country. Last year it produced gold to the amount of £2,300,000. The probabilities are that this year the production will he somewhat under £2,000,000. As a central bank the Commonwealth Bank now attracts all the new gold, the other, hanks having their requirements satisfied bv the importations which were made in the early part of 1025, to the amount of £lO,500,000. Indeed, some of that imported gold lias found its way to the Commonwealth Bank. The writer says: “The hacking of the note issue is a great deal more than that provided for hy legislation. The hanks individually consider that they have ample gold hacking. In these circumstances the accumulation of locally-produced gold in the vaults of the Commonwealth Bank would simply l;e uneconomic'. So a million sovereigns .have been sold, the buyer being the United States. This shipment is the first of any size since the institution of a free market for gold at the end of April, 1925, and virtually marks the resumption of shipments of gold as a commodity.”
