A WESTLAND INDUSTRY
after fifty years. J. ALVNDL & CO. LTD.’S RECORD. Fifty years is a long way to look back on, and the celebration of the jubilee of Westland Brewery, which takes place this year draws attention to, n Westland industry that has survived tlie half century and lias entered on an increasing and improving lease of life as the years go by. It is interesting to note that the business was founded in 1876 by the late ATr Joseph Ala mil who rendered many valuable public services during period. and to whose tireless energy, business integrity and foresight most of the success of the business was duo.
During the past fifty years many changes have necessarily taken place
to enable the business to move forward with the times. Various extensions renewals and improvements have followed as the years* passed by and now tho business stands with n very firm foothold, and with a reputation for the high quality of its output that it would be very difficult to surpass. It is now some twenty-five years since the firm began manufacturing its own malt and the large malt bouse in active operation in Weld Street forms quite a large feature of the advancement of the business of the firm. With the rapid increase of business in later years, very substantial additions to the plant have been made from time to time and it was only recently that very large vats and boilers were installed, far in excess of those that they
replaced, in order to enable the increasing demands for the popular beverage to be coped with. Another side branch was added to the business, an up-to-date bottling plant being installed. That it was a wise move has been amply borne out by the extending demand for the bottled ale and stout
of tho popular “ N.Z.” brand, its ex cellent quality proving a great ndver tisement for its makers.
The • West Coast is particularly adapted for the brewing of beer with its mild atmosphere, and the wonderfully pure water. In regard to the latter, analysis shows that Hokitika’s water supply is one- of the purest in the land and this is a great factor in the manufacture of ale. The quality of the firm’s products are of the highest standard and their purity is vouched for by acknowledged analysts. The entire brewing plant has been re-
newed during the past three years and added to by the installation of every known improvement and with the greatest care shown in the manufacture from beginning to end it is little wonder that the output of the firm should have increased year by year. Now at the end of fifty years the firm are celebrating their jubilee. From a comparatively small beginning the business has continuously increased and it has now a very extensive output. With a. capable management ever alert to the necessity of keeping a little ahead of the times, there is no doubt that the success of the past half century will be continued in the future, and that the good name of Maiull’s beer will be enhanced and added to as the years go by. ,
