HOPE FOR THE FAT

BE SLIM AND LOVELY ! NEW YORK, June IC. Professor Thomas Wood, in charge of physical education at Columbia University, says women can “reduce” safely if they will follow a certain definite plan. What has surprised him is that he has found a woman who followed the plan for several months. Her reward was a loss of 401 b. of surplus fat. The story, told in an article in the “Delineator,” emphasises that safety lies in “reducing" slowly under the care of physicians. A school teacher, the woman weighed at the outset list. 121 b. for her oft. Tin. of height. Her object was to improve her looks and get rid of constant weariness after cuertion. To-day she weighs a delightful Ost. 4lb. “Eat three meals a day,” the doctor advised her; “but don’t eat- pies, pastries, or sweet- desserts. Take the ordinary portion of meat, fish, or chicken, and a full portion of watery vegetables like spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, egg-plant, etc., and only a half portion of starchy vegetables. such n.s potatoes, and of vice. “Peas and shelled beans of any

kind should be taken sparingly, but don’t be afraid of plenty of fresh fruit, particularly oranges. “Simple salads, such as lettuce and tomatoes with a light French dressing, should be eaten frequently. “Drink as much water as you like at any time except with solid food. Cane sugar is unwise for you, so drink only olio cup of tea or coffee with your meals with just half a teaspoon of sugar. “Some butter should be taken with at least’ two meals a day, but sparingly.” i

The teacher visited the doctor weekly, was weighed on the same scales and kept an exact account of the foods eaten at each meal and the amount. She was advised not to eat between meals, and most important this, to walk from one to three miles daily. The reducing should not be more thai21b. a week, and at the latter part of tbe dieting not more than llli. Before the dieting, started tbe teacher underwent an examination which showed that she. was in general good health. Tests were made fortnightly, then monthly, and after the first month the teacher visited the doctor fortnightly instead of weekly. Before dieting the teacher took in food values from 230-9 to 2700 calories daily, while during the reducing campaign the calories taken were from 1200 .to 1500. The story is told, with all sympathy to the over-plump women of the world.
