VALEDICTORY.

' (Hawera “Star.’’) A very popular and esteemed citizen of Manaia, Hr P. J. Howard, was die recipient of a farewell and presentation by' the Manaia Bowling Club at the Manaia Hotel on Wednesday afternoon, June 23rd. There was a muster of 40 bonders present. Air .Howard, who was a leading member of the Aianaia Bowling Chib, has accepted a position in Hokitika with Messrs F. Schroder and Co.

During the period of four years residence at Manaia, Ah' Howard and family were held in high esteem by all who knew them.

The president of the Bowling Club, Mr James Hickey, in making the presentation, mentioned the sterling 'nullities of the guest, not only as a bowler, but also as a citizen; also the deep regret they all felt at bis departure from Malinin. In asking the guest to accept a pipe and pouch as a small token of the esteem in which he was held by his brother bowlers, the speaker congratulated him on his business promotion, anti wished him every success ou the West Coast. Messrs W. J. McDonald and A. H. Christie also spoke in terms of praise of Mr Howard. The healths of the guests were drank, and Mr Howard thanked all present lor their presents and expressions of goodwill towards him. The function broke up with the singing of “For Go’s a Jolly G/iotl bellow” and “Auld Lang Syne.” A presentation was also nvacle to Mr Howard by the Kaupokonui staff, with whom the guest had been associated with for over five years. Last Satuiday Mr G. Jorgenson presented Mr Howard with a solid leather suit case ami a set of razors. The speaker referred to the high esteem in which the guest was held. All the staff icgiet ted his departure, but wished him and his family success.

Mr H. Proud foot also spoke. Mr Howard, in responding, said he regretted leaving his associates at Kaupokonui. They had always worked harmoniously together. He thanked them for the present and the Kind expressions accompanying it. The ladies of the Maiiaia Croquet Club gave an afternoon and presentation at the residence of Airs H. Al. Afclvor to Airs P. J. Howard on Wednesdav. Mrs Afclvor, on behalf of the Ladies’ Croquet Club, in presenting amanicure set. referred to the good work of the departing member. They til regretted her leaving Alaiiaia. and wished her every happiness in her new home on the .South Island. Mrs Howard suitably responded a.ul the tunetion closed with afternoon tea.
