[Australia & N.Z. Cab.a Association.) FIRST TO POLE. WASHINGTON, June 29. A special committee appointed bv the National Geographic Society to examine the accords of Commander Byrd’s flight, have reported that they found them carefully and accurately kept, and that in their opinion, they substantiate in every particular the claim of Commander Byrd that- on May 9th. lie reached the North Pole by airplane, thus being the first person to accomplish the feat by aerial navi-
gation. Two noted mathematicians of the United States Geodetic Survey and tlic Chief Cartographer of the Society, gave the Committee expert assistance in coming to this conclusion. All Commander Byrd’s computations were verified. His probable arrival at the Pole was nine hours three minutes Greenwich civil time, while his estimated time was nine hours, two minutes showing only an error of a minute, involving a distance of about one mile. The report concludes: “The feat of flying a plane six hundred miles from land and returning directly to the port- aimed for is a remarkable exhibition of skilful navigation, and shows beyond reasonable doubt, that he knew where ho was at all times during the lliglit.
QUAKE IN CALIFORNIA. NEW YORK. June 29. A message from Santa Barbara states that one death resulted from, an earthquake in various parts of southern California. The property damage was slight.
