A meeting of underwriters split into two sections, a number deciding to continue to undertake compensation risks, but the rates to be Charged are not yet fixed. A number ol companies however, hope to lie able to undercut tlie Government rate. One company has already decided to make a reduction to 15s per cent on 5s below the Government rate.
FORTY HOTELS TO CLOSE. MELBOURNE), June 29. The Victorian Licensing Court' lias ordered forty additional hotels and two wine shops, chiefly in the Metropolitan area, to be closed before the end of the year. THE N.S.AV. RAILWAY SMASH. SYDNEY, June 29. B At the Aberdeen inquest on the railnay accident, railway experts, giving evidence, stated that fifty miles an hour was a permissable safety speed for a train at the spot wlwre the accident occurred. Members of the train crew gave evidence that the train at the time of the Smash was travelling at not more than 35 miles ail hour.
The examiner, who inspected the train prior to the accident said the gear and brakes were all in first-class order. ACCIDENT INSURANCE, SYDNEY, 1 June 29. After a conference with the controlling officers, it is officially announced that forty-two Australian, British and foreign companies have decided not to he licensed under the AVorkers’ Compensation Act. This number includes most of the big British offices.
