FOOTBALL.

SATURDAY’S GAAIE. Tlie Westland Sub-Union at its meeting last evening very properly took exception to a telegraphed report appearing in the Christchurch “Press” of Monday morning, in reference to the Star-Hokitika match on Saturday. The report is an absolutely unfair and untrue account of the happenings. The game was a well-contested one up to within twenty minutes of time being called, and there were no untoward happenings. Then two men came to h!ow„s and were ordered off by the referee (one man from each team). A few minutes later two Grey players were caught napping when Gibbons following up smartly scored n gift try under their very noses. This latter score, which was converted, took all chance of Grey winning away and there were some of the players so upset that they wanted to leave the field there' and then, but stayed oil at the request of their captain, though the remaining ten minutes play cased down so much that the end was a farce. AVhen a team is fairly and squarely beaten, it is unfortunate that some of its supporters can only follow one course, — blame the referee or the other side, instead of taking a defeat in a proper sportsmanlike manner.

THE SENIOR COMPETITION. Saturday’s game practically ended the Senior Cup competition for the year, as with one game to be played between Hokitika' and United the result cannot ho altered and the Hokitika team become the winners for the year. The particulars are as follow: Played. Won. Lost. Pts. Hokitika ... 5 4 1.8 Star 6 2 4 4 United 5 2 3 4

A PROTEST. Mr D. Dowell moved that the AA restland Sub-Union take strong exception to the report of the Star-Hokitika match appearing in the Christchurch “Press” of the 28tli. Many of the statements contained therein were entirely misleading and grossly inaccurate, the whole report being characterised as a scurrilous fabrication. Seconded by Mr Burns, and carried. Tlie article referred to above* is at follows:

WEST COAST MATCHES. DISORDERLY SCENES AT HOKITIKA. ■ (Special to “The Press”). GREYMOUTH, June 27. At Cass Square, Hokitika, .yesterday, Hokitika won the Senior Cup by defeating Stare by 11 points to 0. The referee’s rulings dissatisfied the visitors and a large proportion of the spectators. The'position was so tense during various stages of the game that it appeared as if the proceedings would finish up in a Donnybrook. The game was punctuated by blasts from the referee’s whistle, the visitors being penalised no fewer than eleven times in ten minutes. Hokitika were penalised twice during the afternoon. The last stages of the match were featured by the Star players repeatedly walking off the ground, and the. final whistle blew amidst general disorder. Pring (Star) and Carter (Hokitika) were ordered off the field by the referee.
