The Auckland waterfront should ho adequately policed in the future as the Harbour Hoard will shortly have a

staff of over 70 special constables in its employ. The hoard at its last meeting decided to have the recently-ap-pointed gatekeepers, the members of its traffic staff and the storekeepers sworn in as special constables. The chairman mentioned that when this was done, the Hoard would have a staff of constables larger than the Auckland police force. With the powers thus conferred upon them, the special constables would he able to keep down cargo pilfering. as they would be authorised to make arrests, whereas at present, offenders often got away while the staff men on duty went in search of a policeman.

In its annual report t'hc Ncrv Zealand Forestry League lays down its policy on tlie question of timber importation as follows:—“Whilst the League recognises that the importation of foreign timbers may he generally supposed to increase the life of our native forests by reducing the consumption of local timbers, what actually happens is that the imported article simply replaces ordinary building timber, which constitutes a small part of the heart and the whole of the sap of the log, and as this is rendered unsaleable it is largely wasted and thrown into the slab heap. The demand for heart timber being steadily maintained, it follows that a larger number of trees are felled annually, and a much smaller percentage of the log is used for trade purposes. The result then is a huge uneconomic waste, and tihe cost of milling the heart timber is considerably increased. The League therefore takes up the position that the importation of timber such as western red cedar, Japanese oak, hemlock, and spruce should be discouraged in the interests of the high utilisation of our own forests products.”
