(by TELEGRArJI —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION THE COUNCIL. WELLINGTON, June 25. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. Two days’ leave of absence was granted Hon. Carrington on account of a death in his family. The Juries’ Amendment Bill was introduced hv Hon McGregor, and read a first time. It promises that a fivesixths majority may he accepted in criminal eases, and that a. trial may be continued notwithstanding that a jury may he reduced in number. Continuing the Addrcss-in-Reply debate. Hon Thomson spoke of the value of rev-arch work in agriculture and industry, and stressed the undeveloped potentialities of the fisheries of the Dominion, both for foods and phosphates. He suggested that naval vessels ho used for marine volcanological observations. Hon. Garland dealt chiefly with financial matters and criticised the large importations of motor cars and the volume of trade with United States which he said should he converted into Empire trade. 1-Ton Moore stressed necessity for trade within tire Empire, spoke trenchantly concerning industrial troubles, advocating strong measures against strikers and strike lender*. The debate adjourned at 4.20 p.m. on the motion of Hon. Mclntyre and the Council rose until 2.30 on Tuesday. THE HOUSE. The House met at 2.30 p.m. No formal business was done but the debate on the Ad dress-in -Reply was carried on by Messrs Howard, Hudson, Jordan, Potter, Mason (Eden), Mason (Napier) and McKeen. The adjournment of the debate was moved by Mr Forbes, and at 11.17 p.m. the House rose till 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday.
