FARMERS' UNION
(Contributed.) A rally party of the West Coast Farmers’ Union, consisting of Messrs W. Clayton (.President), H. G. Carter (Treasurer), J. Mulcore, and F. W. Baillie (provincial secretary) together with -Mr W. Harris, one of the Dominion Organisers, last week made a tour of South Westland with a view to creating enthusiasm: and obtaining new members for the Farmers’ Union in part of the Disrtict. The party left Greymoutb on Thursday last, Mr Carter gratuitously placing bis car at the disposal of the party for the occasion. Maribari was their objective for Thursday and on that evening a meeting of the local farmers was bold in Mr White’s billiard room and in spite of a counter attraction and short notice a fair number of fanners attended, who displayed great interest in the proceedings. All members of the party spoke at length on local and national matters
and a discussion appertaining to tho welfare of the farmers generally and the local branch took place, the result being that there will bo in future a closer co-operation in the working between the Branch and the Provincial Executive.
On Friday the party visited several fanners in the Tlarihari and Watnrou Districts and elicited their aid and interest in the work of the Union.
fn the evening a meeting was held in the factory at Wataron, and was well attended. It was on similar lines to the previous night’s mooting at llariliari. New members were enrolled and all present displayed great interest in the information imparted by the vari-
ous speakers. All present spoke words of appreciation for what was being done hv the Farmers’ Union and all pledged themselves to do their utmost to further the interests of the Union in the District. Mr Chinn moved a vote of thanks to Mr Mulcare, Provincial Secretary, for the past three years and who had now resigned owing to flic pressure of other business, for the splendid work he had done in the interests of the farming community all over the Coast, and for which he received no remuneration.
Mr Mulcare briefly responded. At other meetings Air Harris, one of the Dominion Organisers, outlined his mission to the Coast, which was to enrol as many farmers as possible as members of the Farmers’ Union.
Mr Harris is visiting all farmers pei soimllv and imparting all informatio: concerning the work of the organisa Lion.
The party visited Kokatnhi and Koiterangi on Saturday, the result of which is that- now a strong branch is being formed in those districts. The party are delighted with the results of t heir visit to the various districts and they predict that in a short time there will not be a farmer outside of the union.
The members of the party are to he congratulated on their work, which was undertaken at their personal inconvenience and expense.
