WINTER SCHOOLS

Mr C. S. Dalilicsh, local Field’s Instructor has written to the Progress League os under:—

The question of holding a Winter School for formers this, year, has been gone into and the proposal is to Hold the School in the Northern part of the district, from the 19th to 21th July. Murchison, Westport and K a rumen. districts -will be visited, concluding with n. Field Day at Waimaunga "Experimental Farm. Southern districts would he visited next year.

Those Schools do not appear to be doing the good as far as agricultural matters are concerned in the Southern part as one would expect. Certainly farming conditions are different to most other parts of New Zealand, and more experimental work is required. Experimental work in methods of cultivation is needed as well as experiments in crops and manures. I have had very excellent results in top-dressing old pastures in Westport district on land that has never been ploughed and still carries logs and stumps. Manures without lime have given quite a satisfactory ■and payable result; needless to say where lime has been applied in addition to the maluire tho result is much better. Little progress can hot made on Const lands without lime where cultivation is being done. If further trials of topdressing old pastures with manures alone prove successful, it will help matters greatly. There is no doubt that lime will eventually have to be applied. Tho benefits of good results with top-dressing will assist to procure the lime later on. Experiments in top-dressing on the above lines are being carried out this season, at ICoiterangi and Wntaron.
