The 57 baby health centres which have been established throughout the State have unquestionably done much to reduce the drain of young human life. Up to 1924, out of every 1000 children born in tlie State yearly, nearly 60 died before reaching one year of age. It meant, in short, a total loss of more than 3000 potential citizens each year.. For the first time on refold. thanks in a very big measure to the work of the baby health centres the infant mortality rate of the metropolis alone was lower in 1924 than that of the State as a whole. Since then the rate has been similarly encouraging. Up till 1924 it had always beep higher.
