A farewell social is being tendered to Rev. P. 11. and Mrs Fraser at St. Andrew’s Hall to-night at 7.30 o’clock.

The harbourmaster at Auckland, reporting on the arrangement for cleaning out the tanks of the navy tanker, Nucula, said that the spot where the Marine Doparment had given permission for cleaning't he tanks was only ten miles outside Great Barrier Island and there was a grave possibility of the oil finding its way into the Hauraki Gulf with easterly weather. Tie recommended that the board request the Department to reconsider its decision and fix the position not less than 150 miles from the nearest coast. The recommendation was adopted by the Auckland Harbour Board.

At a meeting of the New Zealand branch of the Empire Parliamentary Association an invitation to send four delegates to the annual gathering, in Australia, when they will he the guests of the Commonwealth Government from September until December, was accepted, and a meeting will shortly he held to decide on the personnel of the delegation. There will he an extensive lour of the Australian States by the delegates, who include five from Britain. It was decided to co-operate with the Government in extending to the latter the utmost hospitality possible when they pass through Auckland on the steamer Niagara, on route for Sydney.

In the House oil Wednesday local protests against the closing of the Blackball-Xgahero bridge to all but railway traffic were brought before the notice of the Prime Minister by Mr IT. E. Holland and Mr Seddon. Mr Coates replied that lit' was unable to give a definite answer, hut when approached earlier by Mr Seddon be bad undertaken to look into the matter and see if it was possible to meet the convenience of local residents. He was sure the Pailway Department would do its utmost, but the position was that if an accident occurred the Department might be liable. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday when a licensing case was being dealt with a witness stated that Rergt. King had advised him to plead guilty; and not to bother with cpousel. This led the officer to contradict the witness, stating that Dowell had told him a few days before that he intended to plead guilty, hut that he was going to get Mr Murdoch to address the Court. Tt was then he said that he (Dowell - * could say what he wished to the Court and save the expense of counsel. The witness denied having said he was going to plead guilty. All he was going to plead was that the slide was up but that it was up for a legitimate purpose. The dialogue was grenly enjoyed by counsel for the witness (Mr Murdoch) who bad an almost similar experience later in the day in regard to another witness.

The death of Mrs James Morris, of Rcefton, took place on Wednesday evening. Deceased, who was in her 80th year, was a native of Portadown, County Armagh. Ireland, and, with her husband, who died 19 years ago, came to New Zealand fifty years ago. She resided at Donogliue's, Ross, Ktimnra. and finally went to reside in Reefton forty years ago.
