WESTPORT HARBOR.
ny TEI.EOUAVH —rIUCBS ASSN., COPYRIGHT. WESTPORT, June 24. Irritation is felt in Westport over what is termed the “penny wise and pound foolish” policy adopted in t-ho matter of harbour equipment. It was voiced vigorously at a Progress League meeting, and formed th? subject of a telegram to the Minister for Marine bv the Mayor, Mr Greenland. It called the attention of the Minister to the break-down of the patchod-up coal loading crane on the wharf. It was generally predicted at the time when the alterations were contemplated that this crane would he a failure, and representations were made to the Afinister to purchase an up-to-date electrical ty-driVcn, crane. The break-down lias interfered with coal loading operations at a time when the outlook for the coal (trade at Wiestport looks brighter than it has been since prewar days.
Something like alarm is also felt at a failure to take steps to prevent river encroachment above the Bailor Bridge, wlicre the river threatens to break away in a new direction, converting the town of Westport into an Island, and possibly rendering inoperative the Westport Harbour, on which £3,000,000 lias bean spent.
