A further development in connection witli a. daring daylight robbery on June 12th., when a. considerable quantity of spirits was removed from the bonded warehouses of L. I). Nathan and Co., Ltd., occurred to-day, when Michael Kendy, hotelkeeper, was arrested in connection with the matter., K-endy was taken to the Police Court and charged, in conjunction with Horace Vincent Speight, who appeared before the Court last week, and was remanded, with breaking and entering the warehouse with intent to commit theft, and nith stealing liquor valued at 1377 Is ]Od, and also with receiving liquor, knowing it to have been dislionestiv obtained.

lit addition, Speight- alone was charged with theft of a quantity of liquor valued at £24 10s -Id. On the application of Senior Sergeant Hammond, a remand was granted until Monday, bail being fixed at £2OO, with one surety of £2OO.

DEATH OF C. P. HULBERT. WELLINGTON, June 23.

Obituary.—C. P. Hulbert, aged S-L formerly a well known business man in Christchurch, where he was twice .Mayor. He was born in Bristol and arrived in New Zealand from Australia in 1860, lie took part in the rush at Gabriel’s Gully and Dunstan in Otago and later served in the Maori War. He was a prominent mason and had five sons serving in the war, the youngest of whom. Captain L. 11. Hulbert, was killed in the battle of Somme in !9!('i. Ho leaves a widow and eight of a family. He will lie buried in Christchurch to-morrow.

Mr .MncManiiN. the local Labour leadc-r, stated this morning that a number of the Southland men have been placed on the Balelutha-Grcen-valc job. which the Government stated was the only schedule with which it could place men. He contended that there should he enough public works in Southland without bringing Southlamlers to Otago, and declared the Government was making a political move to force the unemployment situation.

Bray died on the way to the hospital. fire at Hastings. HASTINGS. June 23. Early this morning an eight roomed residence in Duke Street, owned and occupied by Guy Rochl’ort was destroyed by fire. The Brigade was handicapped by the distance from the main water supply and consequently the pressure at the end of a nineteen hundred feet hose was negligible, but they saved the outbuildings. PARCEL DELIVERY SYSTEM. WELLINGTON, June 23. An agitation is still going on against ihe cash on delivery parcel system of the Post Office. Representations made to the Chamber of Commerce tint it assists traders at Home to the disadvantage of the traders in New Zealand and enables them to escape many charges, the hitter have to hear. It i.s also claimed that the goods are of doubtful origin and may be foreign, though they get the benefit of preferential duties. The Chamber indorsed the complaint and agreed to bring it before the Government.

A large boulder, trapped in a cloth \Vas thrown through 'he window, making a large hole through which the thieves removed a ',. y laden with diamond rings, etc. They wore then evidently disturbed. David Bookman (proprietor) is unable to give an estimate of the value of the rings stolen.
