SYDNEY’S OBSERVATORY. SYDNEY. June 10. Sydney’s old Observatory is not to go, after all. It was marked, like the Legislative Council, for destruction, hut the Labour Government lias changed its mind. Its attitude was that the stars were not ilio exclusive responsibility of New South Wales, and that they strictly came within the Federal sphere, but the Federal Government turned a deaf ear to this sort of talk, and the work of the Observatory is to continue under State control. It wi be under the control of. the Director of Technical Education- (Mr Nangle). Professor Cooke being about to retire from the post of Government Astronomer. For the old Observatory up on the lull, looking out, amidst trees as old as Sydney itself, over the harbour, the community have always had a reverential regard, even if they were not greatly interested in the heavenly bodies. The work will now be continued, by international agreement, of photographing the stars from the Observatory and putting them in their places in the map.
